Time zone and time sync

Sets the server's time zone and keeps its clock accurate with network time.

  • Debian / Ubuntu: supported

What it changes on your server

  • Installs the time zone database if needed and points /etc/localtime at your zone.
  • Turns on network time: systemd-timesyncd (Debian, Ubuntu) or chrony (RHEL, Fedora, Alpine).

What Shellbay asks you

  1. Which time zone?

    Use a region and city name. Many people keep servers on UTC, so logs from different places line up.

    Shellbay checks the server knows that time zone.

Steps

  1. Install the time zone database and time sync
  2. Set the time zone
  3. Turn on network time
  4. Show the time

Shellbay checks the server before the first step, and stops at the first step that fails.

When it's done

  • The server uses ‹time zone› and syncs its clock over the network.
