Portainer CE

Runs Portainer, a web interface for managing Docker, reachable only through an SSH port forward.

Before you start

  • Run the Docker Engine and Compose workflow first.

What it changes on your server

  • Creates the portainer_data volume and runs the Portainer container, restarting with Docker.
  • Publishes it on 127.0.0.1:9443 only, not to the network.
  • Gives Portainer access to the Docker socket, which is root-equivalent.
  • Sets a random admin password, stored root-only in /etc/shellbay/portainer-admin-password.

What Shellbay asks you

Nothing. This workflow needs no details from you.

Steps

  1. Create the data volume
  2. Start Portainer
  3. Check it's running on this server only

Shellbay checks the server before the first step, and stops at the first step that fails.

When it's done

  • In Shellbay, add a local port forward 9443 → 127.0.0.1:9443 to this host, then open https://localhost:9443.
  • Sign in as admin. The password is on the server: run sudo cat /etc/shellbay/portainer-admin-password, then change it in Portainer.
